Principal Investigator
Verena Liu holds a research and teaching position at the University of Augsburg. Previously, she was a research assistant at the University of Greifswald, as well as a concert editor for the Salzburg Festival. She has taught at the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK), the Freiburg University of Music (MH) and the University of Salzburg. From 2021 to 2024, she was one of three spokespersons for the “Early Career Researcher Group” in the German Musicological Society.
After studying in Weimar, Jena, Hanover and Göttingen, she was awarded a PhD in 2021 from the University of Oldenburg with a thesis on historical music education. She spent two years as a Robert Bosch Foundation scholarship holder at a university in China.
Her research into modern opera houses formed part of the ‘Fragmented Transformations/Shared Heritage’ project at the Interdisciplinary Research Centre for the Baltic Sea Region at the University of Greifswald between 2021 and 2024. Her current research interests focus on the history of popular music in the 20th century, women in 19th-century music education, and processes of canonisation and programme planning in classical concerts. International research and conference trips have taken her to Oslo, Copenhagen, Tromsø, Gothenburg, Tours, Manchester, Los Angeles and Seattle.
